Why Some Headaches Don’t Improve
While acupuncture is a go-to therapy for headaches, some patients fail to see lasting improvement despite consistent treatment. This article argues that the reason often lies beyond textbook TCM patterns. Modern patients frequently present with complex, overlapping conditions where headaches are intertwined with chronic stress, poor sleep, digestive issues, and hormonal imbalances. Applying standard point protocols may offer temporary relief but won't resolve the underlying systemic dysfunction. A critical, often-overlooked factor is a dysregulated autonomic nervous system, with many individuals stuck in a state of sympathetic "fight-or-flight" dominance. This state perpetuates muscle tension, vascular changes, and heightened pain sensitivity. For these challenging cases, treatment must shift from merely managing symptoms to regulating the entire nervous system. The author advocates for a more comprehensive strategy that includes re-evaluating the diagnosis regularly, addressing sleep and digestion, and crucially, integrating herbal medicine. For many chronic headache sufferers, acupuncture alone is not enough to stabilize long-term imbalances. By adopting a system-based approach, practitioners can turn treatment-resistant cases into successes, providing meaningful and durable results where standard protocols fall short.
